The Beginnings of the First Catechist Training Centre in Enga

The missionary activity in the Highlands Province of Enga (Papua New Guinea) commenced in 1947 and within fifteen years the whole area was influenced by Christian teaching. The Society of the Divine Word played the leading role in spreading the Gospel. The missionary engagement was not only to preach the Good News and acquaint the people with Christian values but to form a local elite of catechists able to participate in the process of evangelising their own people side by side with expatriate missionaries. That is why in 1969 Fr. B. Kuhnert SVD founded the Catechetical Training Centre at Kepilam. His initiative was fully supported by the diocesan bishop and his fellow missionaries working in Enga, who were all involved in the planning and implementation of the programs. After a few years the CTC was transferred to a more accessible spot in the Tsak Valley where it functioned up to 1991 and served the four Highlands dioceses of Wabag, Kundiawa, Goroka and Mount Hagen.



Die Missionstätigkeit in der Hochlandprovinz Enga (Papua-Neuguinea) begann 1947, und im Laufe von 15 Jahren beeinflußte die christliche Lehre das ganze Gebiet. Die Gesellschaft des Göttlichen Wortes spielte eine führende Rolle bei der Verbreitung des Evangeliums. Die Absicht der Missionare war nicht nur, die Frohe Botschaft zu verkünden und die Menschen mit christlichen Werten vertraut zu machen, sondern auch eine örtliche Elite von Katechisten auszubilden, die Seite an Seite mit den ausländischen Missionaren am Prozeß der Evangelisierung ihres Volkes mitarbeiten könnten. Deshalb gründete P. B. Kuhnert SVD 1969 das Katechetische Ausbildungszentrum in Kepilam. Seine Initiative wurde vom Diözesanbischof und seinen Mitmissionaren, die in Enga arbeiteten und alle in die Planung und Durchführung der Programme einbezogen waren, voll unterstützt. Nach einigen Jahren wurde das Katechetische Ausbildungszentrum an einen leichter zugänglichen Ort im Tsak-Tal umgesiedelt, wo es bis 1991 existierte und den vier Hochlanddiözesen Wabag, Kundiawa, Goroka und Mount Hagen diente.



El trabajo misional en la provincia de montañas Enga (Papua-Nueva Guinea) comenzó en 1947 y en el transcurso de 15 años la doctrina cristiana influenció toda la región. La Congregación del Verbo Divino tuvo un rol director en la propagación del evangelio. La intención de los misioneros no se limitaba a anunciar la Buena Nueva y familiarizar a los hombres con los valores cristianos. Buscaban también a formar un élite de catequistas locales que junto con los misioneros extranjeros podían colaborar en el proceso de la evangelización de su pueblo. Por esta razón el P. B. Kuhnert SVD fundó en 1969 el centro de formación catequística en Kepilam. Su iniciativa fue plenamente apoyada por el obispo diocesano y sus comisioneros que trabajaban en Enga e intervinieron en el planeamiento y la ejecución del programa. Después de algunos años el centro de formación catequística fue trasladado a un lugar más accesible en el valle de Tsak, donde existió hasta 1991 y servía a los cuatro diócesis de la alta montaña: Wabag, Kundiawa, Goroka y Mount Hagen.
