Triumph through War and Suffering the SVD Missions in West Gansu 1922-1953

After having described the geographical and cultural background of West Gansu, this article reviews the mission history in this region over a span of about 1,300 years before tuming its focus on the Divine Word Missionaries who made their first appearance here in 1922. As the title indicates, the missionary life and activity of the SVD was characterized by constant challenges and difficulties brought about by war and natural disasters and eventually ended with the shift of political power on a national scale. By presenting many factual data and examining some key events, this article not only gives its readers a fuller picture of what the SVDs have done in West Gansu, but also brings to life the spirituality and mentality of the missionaries, along with their faithful coworkers and flocks.


Im Jahr 1922 kam die Steyler Missionsgesellschaft nach West-Gansu, China. Dieser Artikel skizziert zunächst den geografischen und kulturellen Hintergrund und behandelt dann die Geschichte des Christentums dort, über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 1300 Jahren, bevor er sich der Geschichte der SVD-Mission zuwendet. Despues de describir el fondo geográfico y cultural de Gansu Oeste, este artículo relata la historia de la misión de 1.300 años, antes de enfocar la historia de la SVD que comenzó en 1922. La vida y el trabajo de los misioneros Verbitas durante los 30 años de su presencia estuvieron caracterizados por problemas y dificultades a causa de la guerra y las catástrofes naturales, hasta que su trabajo misionero llegara a su fin por el cambio político en el país. El artículo describe no solamente el trabajo realizado por los Verbitas en Gansu Oeste, sino también la espiritualidad y mentalidad de los misioneros y de sus colaboradores y los cristianos.
