Die in vorliegendem Beitrag ausgewerteten Briefe charakterisieren ihn als eine markante, sympathische und beeindruckende Persönlichkeit, deren wohlwollendes Interesse und totales Engagement China und seinen Menschen gegolten haben, die er in achtundzwanzig Jahren missionarischer Tätigkeit für das Christentum zu gewinnen suchte. Aufgeschlossen, sensibel und zugleich die Ereignisse nah und fern kritisch reflektierend, begegnete P. Bücker von Anfang an den Chinesen, ihrer Geschichte, Kultur und Lebensart respektvoll, vorurteilsfrei und tolerant. Seine Sorge, sein Mitgefühl und Einsatz galten den Menschen, namentlich den in Not und Elend befindlichen. Er hatte Stil, kannte und beherrschte bestens die chinesische Etikette. Diese Verhaltensweise haben die Chinesen, ob Christ oder Nichtchrist, quer durch alle Bevölkerungsgruppen und gesellschaftlichen Positionen, entsprechend honoriert.
Having left for the China mission in summer 1883 together with five confreres, Fr. Theodor Bücker, SVD witnessed the pioneer period of the difficult and dangerous mission in South Shandong. His letters home, on which this article is based, present a distinctive, likeable and impressive personality, a man who from the start showed a benevolent interest in and a total commitment to China and its people, whom he tried to win for Christianity in his twenty-eight years of missionary work in this country. Open-minded, sensitive and a critical observer of events near and far, Fr. Bücker's attitude to the Chinese, their history, culture and way of life was characterized from the very first by respect, tolerance and a surprising freedom from the prejudice current at that period. It was people he was concerned for, he sympathized with and worked for, especially those in need. He had style and was extremely well versed in Chinese etiquette. All this was appreciated by the Chinese, Christians and non-Christians alike, through all strata of society that he came in contact with.
El P. Teodoro Bücker SVD había salido para China con cinco cohermanos en gerano de 1883, participando en los años pioneros difíciles y peligrosos de la misión de Shantung meridional. En este artículo se basa en datos sacados de sus cartas Lo caracterizan como personalidad destacada, simpatica e impresionante. Su interés benevolo y su esfuerzo denodado eran para China y sus habitantes que trató de ganar a Cristo durante los veintiocho años de su actividad misionera. Abierto, sensible, reflexionando al mismo tiempo con discernimiento sobre los eventos distantes y cercanos, el P. Bücker se aproximaba desde el comienzo a los chinos, a su historia, cultura y costumbres, con respeto, sin prejuicios y con tolerancia. Se preocupaba de los hombres, especialmente de los que vivian en necesidad y miseria. Sentía con ellos, abogaba por ellos. Tenía personalidad, conocía y dominaba la etiqueta china. Los chinos, cristianos o no, honraban esta actitud independientemente de su grupo o posición social.
