Das vorliegende Heft enthält vor allem die Beiträge einer Konferenz von „Anthropos International“, die vom 15. bis zum 20. September 2003 in Nysa (Neisse)/Polen stattfand. „Anthropos International“ ist die Dachorganisation verschiedener ethnologischer Institute der Gesellschaft des Göttlichen Wortes. Das Hauptthema der Konferenz war die Verbindung streng wissenschaftlicher Arbeit auf dem Feld der Ethnologie und Anthropologie mit der praktischen Arbeit der Verkündigung des Evangeliums, was ja auch das eigentliche Anliegen von P. Wilhelm Schmidt, dem Gruuml;nder der Zeitschrift Anthropos, war.

Neben diesem grundsätzlichen Anliegen widmeten sich die Teilnehmer der Konferenz in Nysa auch der speziellen Situation Europas.

Außerdem enthält dieses Heft eine Würdigung von P. Johannes Fleckner, der an Heiligabend 2003 im Alter von 92 Jahren in St. Augustin verstarb. P. Fleckner trug von Anfang an die Arbeit des Missionswissenschaftlichen Instituts in St. Augustin an verantwortlicher Stelle mit. Das Porträt eines bemerkenswerten China-Missionars, des P. Theodor Bücker SVD, beschließt das Heft.


This issue contains first of all the papers presented at a conference of “Anthropos International” which has taken place September 15 to 20, 2003, at Nysa, Poland. “Anthropos International” is the umbrella organization linking different anthropological institutes of the SVD. The main topic of the conference was the combination of serious scholarly work in the field of anthropology with our practical task of evangelization, which had also been the vision of Fr. Wilhelm Schmidt, the founder of the review Anthropos. Apart from discussing the matter in general terms, the participants also turned their attention to the special situation in Europe.

In addition, this issue presents an obituary of Fr. Johannes Fleckner, who died on Christmas Eve 2003 at Sankt Augustin, at the age of 92. From the very beginning, he had held responsible positions in the Steyler Missionswissenschaftliches Institut and never stopped contributing to our work until the final months of his life.

A portrait of another remarkable China missionary, this time from the earliest period of the SVD Shandong mission, Fr. Theodor Bücker, SVD, concludes this first issue of 2004.
