Das Erzbistum Köln und seine Beziehung zur katholischen Kirche in Togo in den Jahren 1880-1920

Als 1991 Unruhen in Togo ausbrachen, flüchteten ca. 12.000 Togoer nach Deutschland. Auf die Frage, warum sie denn Deutschland und kein französischsprachiges Aufnahmeland gewählt hätten, antworteten sie, dass sich Deutschland in der ehemaligen deutschen Kolonie Togoland seinen guten Ruf erhalten habe und daher kämen sie gern zu ihren „Großeltern“. Der Artikel gibt einen Einblick in die Aktivitäten des in Köln ansässigen Afrika-Vereins der deutschen Katholiken im Spannungsfeld der deutschen Außenpolitik der Jahre 1888-1920 und der Missionstätigkeit der Steyler Missionare in Togoland. Er zeigt auf, warum die Deutschen gerade in Togo bis heute hohe Sympathie genießen.

When in 1991 unrest broke out in Togo, some 12,000 Togolese fled to Germany. When questioned why they had gone there and not to a French-speaking country, they said that Germany had retained a good reputation in its former colony of “Togoland” and so they had chosen the country of their “grandparents.” The article sketches some of the activities of the Cologne-based “Afrika-Verein der deutschen Katholiken” (German Catholics for Africa) in the context of German foreign politics in the era 1888-1920 and the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries in Togoland. It explains why in Togo especially a positive image of Germans has survived to this day.


Cuando en 1991 las agitaciones comenzaron en Togo, unos 12.000 togoleses se refugiaron en Alemania. Preguntados por qué habían elegido Alemania y no un país de habla francesa, contestaron que Alemania había conservado una buena fama en la ex-colonia alemana de Togo, y por esta razón les gustaba venir a sus “abuelos”. El artículo nos da una idea de las actividades de la Asociación Africana de los Católicos Alemanes con sede en Colonia, en el contexto de la política exterior alemana entre los años 1888 y 1920 y la actividad misionera de los verbitas en Togo. Aclara por qué los alemanes precisamente en Togo disfrutan de una gran simpatía hasta hoy.
