Developments in the understanding of mission since Vatican II are presented here with a focus on “mission in Germany” and “missionary ecumenism.” The understanding of the concept of mission based on the often quoted phrase from Ad Gentes, “The Church on earth is by its very nature missionary since, according to the plan of the Father, it has its origin in the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit” (AG 2), is broader these days, because mission is no longer simply understood as an activity of the Church, but much more as an essential element of the Church's nature. In addition, the churches become more and more aware of the importance of ecumenism for their mission – including for responding to missionary challenges in Germany. The way of mission - inspired also by insights of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences - is dialogue, a prophetic dialogue taking seriously the otherness of the other and giving witness of one's own faith.
