It belongs to the understanding of the Society of the Divine Word as missionary to further a comprehensive understanding of culture and in this way to make a positive and enduring contribution to the encounter between cultures and religions. “Anthropos - International Review of Anthropology and Linguistics” has a share in this missionary service. It covers all regions of the earth and all of the fields of anthropology. Its pages are open to discussions of method and theory as well as broad ethnographic descriptions and other documentation. It has maintained its character as a storehouse of ethnological materials for libraries and institutes. It has become an encyclopedia of information about anthropology. Anthropos deals with people and their cultures, with people and the variety of their cultures, with people and how they relate to other cultures. It was always the intention and hope of Wilhelm Schmidt SVD - the founder and first editor of Anthropos - to use this journal to foster, in the context of the mission work of the Society, what we would now call a “multicultural encounter.” It was to be a forum in which the missionaries could make their precious and largely untapped knowledge of strange peoples and cultures available, and where they could find useful specialized information about anthropology. A Journal which has as part of its program the scientific study of cultures can facilitate in an important way the exchange and contact between cultures. In the future the journal will continue in this direction.
Es gehört zum missionarischen Selbstverständnis der Gesellschaft des Göttlichen Wortes (SVD), eine die Kulturen übergreifende Verständigung zu fördern und so einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Begegnung von Religionen und Kulturen zu leisten. „Anthropos - Internationale Zeitschrift für Völker- und Sprachenkunde“ hat an diesem missionarischen Dienst einen besonderen Anteil. Anthropos deckt von Anfang an alle Regionen der Erde und alle Teilbereiche der Ethnologie ab. Diskussionen um Theorie und Methode haben ebenso ihren Platz wie breite ethnographische Berichte und Dokumentationen. Sie hat sich den Charakter eines ethnologischen Magazins, vor allem für Bibliotheken und Institute, bewahrt und wurde zu einer umfangreichen Enzyklopädie der Völkerkunde. Der Name Anthropos stand und steht bis heute für das Programm der Zeitschrift. Es geht um den Menschen und seine Kulturen, um den Menschen in der Vielfalt der Kulturen, um den Menschen in der Begegnung der Kulturen. Es war stets die Absicht und die ständige Hoffnung von P. Wilhelm Schmidt, SVD, dem Gründer und ersten Redakteur dieser Fachzeitschrift, im Rahmen des Steyler Missionswerkes das zu fördern, was wir heute unter multikultureller Begegnung verstehen und fördern. Gedacht war die Zeitschrift als Forum, wo Missionare ihr unschätzbares und oft unausgeschöpftes Wissen über fremde Völker und Kulturen weitergeben konnten. Anthropos wird diesem Programm auch in Zukunft folgen.
Es parte de la autocomprensión misionera de la Congregación del Verbo Divino (SVD) promover un mutuo entendimiento de las culturas, y contribuir así en forma decisiva al encuentro de las religiones y culturas. “Anthropos”, la revista internacional de antropología y lingüística, tiene una participación especial en este servicio misional. Desde el comienzo cubre todas las regiones del mundo y todos los campos particulares de la etnología. Sus páginas están abiertas tanto a las discusiones teóricas y metodológicas como a extensos relatos y documentaciones etnográficas. Ha conservado su carácter de revista de información etnológica para bibliotecas e instituciones, y llegó a ser una enciclopedia de etnología. El nombre “Anthropos” representa el programa de la revista hasta hoy. Trata de los hombres y sus culturas, de los hombres en la variedad de sus culturas, de los hombres en el encuentro de las culturas. Siempre ha sido la intención y la esperanza constante del P. Wilhelm Schmidt SVD, fundador y primer redactor de esta revista especializada, fomentar dentro del marco de la obra misional de Steyl, lo que hoy en día entendemos por encuentro multicultural. La revista había sido pensada como un foro donde los misioneros podían transmitir sus conocimientos inagotados de pueblos y culturas desconocidas. “Anthropos” seguirá este programa también en el futuro.
