The Pontifical College of St. Peter the Apostle

In 1946 the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith opened in Rome a College which was to serve selected priests from mission countries. They would form a community and frequent the Pontifical Faculties for their specialized studies. In this way Propaganda wanted to meet a growing need in the mission churches. The direction was entrusted to the Society of the Divine Word. Superior General Joseph Grendel saw this as a high mark of confidence. The “Ancelle Missionarie del Santissimo Sacramento” offered their collaboration. The Pontifical Missionary Society of St. Peter the Apostle provides the financial resources; its President, Archbishop Celso Costantini, is seen as the true Founding Father. The College of St. Peter the Apostle was developed to a capacity of about 150 alumni by 1969. In sixty years, over 2300 priests from 91 countries joined the College, acquired academic degrees, and experienced the universal Church in a unique way. 201 of them became bishops. The Popes have shown the greatest interest from the very origin of the institute which they see as a precious instrument at the service of evangelization.
 

Im Jahr 1946 eröffnete die Kongregation für die Glaubensverbreitung ein Kolleg in Rom für ausgewählte Priester aus den Missionen. Sie sollten in Gemeinschaft leben und an den Päpstlichen Hochschulen weiterführende Studien machen. Man wollte so einem wachsenden Bedarf der Missionskirchen entgegenkommen. Den Steyler Missionaren wurde die Leitung anvertraut, was Generalsuperior Joseph Grendel als eine hohe Auszeichnung ansah. Die Schwestern der Gemeinschaft „Ancelle Missionarie del Santissimo Sacramento“ boten ihre Mitarbeit an. Das Päpstliche Missionswerk vom hl. Apostel Petrus besorgt die finanziellen Mittel. Sein damaliger Präsident, Erzbischof Celso Costantini, gilt als Gründervater. Das Kolleg vom hl. Apostel Petrus wurde bis 1969 zu einer Kapazität von etwa 150 Alumnen ausgebaut. In 60 Jahren wurden über 2300 Priester aus 91 Ländern aufgenommen, haben akademische Grade erworben und in einzigartiger Weise Weltkirche erlebt. 201 der Alumnen wurden Bischöfe. Die Päpste haben von Anfang an großes Interesse gezeigt und sehen das Kolleg als ein wertvolles Mittel im Dienst der Evangelisation.


En 1946 la Sagrada Congregación para la Propagación de la Fe abrió en Roma un Colegio para sacerdotes seleccionados de los países de misión. Su objetivo era, formar una comunidad y frecuentar las facultades Pontificias para realizar sus estudios especializados. De esta forma, esta Congregación deseaba encontrar una solución para la creciente necesidad en las iglesias de misión. La dirección se le confió a la Congregación del Verbo Divino. El Superior General, P. Joseph Grendel, vio en este gesto, una muestra de gran confianza. Una congregación femenina, las “Doncellas Misioneras del Santísimo Sacramento”, ofrecieron igualmente su colaboración. La Sociedad Misionera Pontificia de San Pedro Apóstol, provee de recursos financieros; y a su presidente, el Arzobispo Celso Costantini, se lo considera como Padre Fundador. Hacia 1969, el Colegio San Pedro Apóstol, como se lo denominó, se expandió a una capacidad de 150 alumnos. Durante sesenta años, más de 2300 sacerdotes de 91 países han sido favorecidos con el servicio del Colegio, adquiriendo grados académicos, y experimentando la universalidad de la Iglesia en una forma particular. De ellos, 201 han llegado a ser obispos. Los Sumos Pontífices han mostrado siempre un gran interés desde el comienzo del instituto, al cuál ven como un instrumento muy valioso al servicio de la evangelización.
