Formation for Mission in the African Context

Since after the Second Vatican Council, the issue of communicating the message of Jesus Christ to the Africans in such a way that it truly touches their lives has been a major concern of the leaders of the Church in Africa. To address this crucial matter, the Fathers of the 1994 Synod for Africa not only called for proper contextualization – involving processes of inculturation, liberation etc. – of the gospel in Africa, but also they emphasized the importance of the formation of the agents for the Church’s mission. Unfortunately, adequate response has not been given to this call. Indeed, for the gospel to be communicated effectively to Africans, it has to be done in the language/categories/symbols they understand and by a genuine witness. As this work therefore demonstrates, African hospitality provides powerful symbols – familiar to Africans – that are not only useful in the formation of the agents of mission, but also enable the agents to communicate the Gospel meaningfully and effectively in the African context. Any authentic formation for mission must take such an orientation.


Seit dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil ist die Frage, wie die Botschaft Jesu den Afrikanern so verkündet werden kann, dass sie ihr Leben wirklich berührt, ein Hauptanliegen der afrikanischen Kirche. Um diese entscheidende Frage anzugehen, forderten im Jahr 1994 die Väter der Bischofssynode für Afrika nicht nur eine wirkliche Kontextualisierung des Evangeliums für ihren Kontinent, die Inkulturations-, Befreiungs- und andere Prozesse einschließt, sondern sie betonten außerdem die Bedeutung der Ausbildung der Missionare. Leider wurde dieser Aufruf nicht entsprechend beantwortet. Damit das Evangelium den Afrikanern wirksam verkündet werden kann, muss man die Sprache, Kategorien, Symbole benutzen, die sie verstehen, und ein echtes Zeugnis geben. Wie dieser Artikel zeigt, enthält die afrikanische Gastfreundschaft aussagekräftige Symbole, die den Afrikanern sehr vertraut sind und die nicht nur nützlich sind bei der Ausbildung der Missionare, sondern sie auch befähigen, das Evangelium sinnvoll und wirksam im afrikanischen Kontext zu verkünden. Jede authentische missionarische Ausbildung muss sich daran orientieren.


Desde el Concilio Vaticano Segundo la pregunta cómo se puede anunciar el mensaje de Cristo a los africanos de una manera que influya realmente en su vida, es una de las preocupaciones pincipales de la Iglesia africana. Para solucionar este asunto, en 1994 los Padres del Sínodo de los Obispos para el África reclamaron para su continente una contextualización del Evangelio que incluyera los procesos de inculturación, liberación y otros. Además insistieron en la importancia de la formación de los misioneros. Lastimosamente esta llamada no tuvo la respuesta esperada. Para anunciar efectivamente el Evangelio a los africanos, hay que usar el lenguaje, las categorías y los símbolos que entienden, y dar un testimonio auténtico. Como el artículo lo demuestra, la hospitalidad africana contiene símbolos expresivos con los cuales los africanos están familiarizados, que no solamente son útiles en la formación de los misioneros, sino además los capacitan para proclamar el Evangelio con claridad y efectivamente en el contexto africano. Toda auténtica formación misionera tiene que orientarse por ellos.
