Transform Yourself! An Indonesian Reading on the XVI General Chapter of the Divine Word Missionaries

Mission is basically a business of transformation. Christian community, as a community of disciples, participates in mission, namely transformation of the world as God wants it to be. The Society of the Divine Word was founded to participate in this “missio Dei.” In principle members of the Society have committed themselves to be participants in this divine business, the work of salvation. This article tries to highlight some issues of transformation which have been formulated by the XVI General Chapter of the Society held in Rome, June 4 – July 8, 2006. The writer tries to look at them from an Indonesian perspective and looks for ways of their implementation. He considers that this could best be done in the SVD’s communities which are, says the General Chapter, to be regarded as “schools of dialogue.” Precisely in these communities issues of transformation in line with the gospel values should be elaborated in such a way that the members are being revitalized time and again. In so doing, missionaries can grow more and more in the spirit of prophetic dialogue and become – as St. Paul says – “everything for everyone” (cf. 1 Co 9:19).

Mission soll die Welt verändern. Die christliche Gemeinschaft nimmt als Gemeinschaft von Jüngern an der Mission teil, d. h. an der Veränderung der Welt, so wie Gott sie will. Die Gesellschaft des Göttlichen Wortes wurde gegründet, um an dieser „missio Dei“ teilzunehmen, und ihre Mitglieder haben sich dazu verpflichtet, an dieser göttlichen Aufgabe, dem Heilswerk, mitzuarbeiten. Der Artikel versucht, einige Gesichtspunkte dieser Veränderung, wie sie auf dem 16. Generalkapitel der Gesellschaft vom 4. Juni bis 8. Juli 2006 in Rom formuliert wurden, zu beleuchten. Der Verfasser betrachtet sie aus der indonesischen Perspektive und sucht nach Wegen für ihre Durchführung. Er meint, dass das am besten in den SVD-Gemeinschaften geschehen könne, die, wie das Generalkapitel sagt, als „Schulen des Dialogs“ zu betrachten sind. Gerade in diesen Kommunitäten können Veränderungen im Einklang mit den Werten des Evangeliums auf eine Weise erarbeitet werden, dass die Mitglieder immer wieder eine neue Belebung erfahren. Dabei können die Missionare immer mehr im Geist des prophetischen Dialogs wachsen und, wie der hl. Paulus sagt, „allen alles werden“ (vgl. 1 Kor 9,19).

La misión ha de cambiar al mundo. La comunidad cristiana participa de la misión, e.d. de la transformación del mundo como lo quiere Dios, como comunidad de discípulos. La Congregación del Verbo Divino fue fundada para participar en esta “missio Dei”, y sus miembros se han comprometido a colaborar en esta tarea divina, la obra de la salvación. El artículo trata de iluminar algunos puntos de esta transformación, como fueron formulados en el XVI Capítulo General del 4 de Junio al 8 de Julio de 2006 en Roma. El autor la contempla desde la perspectiva indonesia, y busca un camino para su eje-cución. Opina que esta transformación puede realizarse mejor en las comunidades SVD que, según las palabras del Capítulo General, tienen que ser consideradas “escuelas de diálogo”. Precisamente en estas comunidades pueden elaborarse las transformaciones de acuerdo con los valores del Evangelio, y así los miembros pueden experimentar una nueva vitalidad. Al mismo tiempo los misioneros crecerán cada vez más en el espíritu del diálogo profético y así pueden, como dice san Pablo, “hacerse todo para todos” (cf. 1 Cor 9,19).
