Im Jahr 2007 gilt es zweier Jubiläen der SVD zu gedenken: Es ist zum einen 100 Jahre her, dass die Steyler Missionare in Japan missionarisch tätig sind. Zum anderen haben die Steyler vor 75 Jahren ihre Tätigkeit in Indien begonnen.

Diese beiden Ereignisse werden in diesem Heft reflektiert. Im ersten Artikel geht es um einen Rückblick auf 100 Jahre missionarischer Mitarbeit der Steyler in Japan. Es wird die wechselvolle Geschichte der Kirche in Japan in den letzten 100 Jahren dargestellt. Dann geht es um eine Skizzierung der Gegenwart sowie einen Ausblick in die Zukunft. All dies wird aufgezeigt unter dem Blickwinkel der Steyler Tätigkeit in Japan.

Der zweite Aufsatz beleuchtet 75 Jahre Steyler Missionare in Indien. Er bietet eine kurze Zusammenfassung der Geschichte sowie Überlegungen zur Missionsarbeit im heutigen Indien und zu zukünftigen Herausforderungen der christlichen Missionstätigkeit.

Sodann behandelt das vorliegende Heft drei wichtige Themen der missionarischen Kirche heute.

Im ersten Beitrag geht es um die Pfingstler, die längst keine Randerscheinung mehr sind. Im Konkreten wird der immer stärker pentekostale Charakter des Christentums in Ghana untersucht. Diese Entwicklung stellt die historischen Kirchen vor verschiedene Fra-gen, die angegangen werden müssen. 

Im zweiten Aufsatz wird das Thema der Suche nach Frieden in der heutigen Welt behandelt. Dabei geht es um ein eminent missionarisches Thema von größter Bedeutung für die heutige Welt. Dazu genügt es, an die Regensburger Rede des Papstes zu erinnern sowie an die bevorstehende zweite Bischofssynode für Afrika mit dem Thema: „Dienst von Versöhnung, Gerechtigkeit und Frieden“ und auch an das internationale IAMS-Treffen des nächsten Jahres unter dem Thema: „Human Identity and the Gospel of Reconciliation.“

Im letzten Beitrag geht es um bibelpastorale Arbeit, und zwar im Speziellen um die Methode des Bibliodramas, die vor allem in den Ländern Asiens immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnt.


This year we are commemorating two important anniversaries: On the one hand it was precisely 100 years ago that the Divine Word Missionaries began work in Japan, on the other the Indian mission of the SVD started exactly 75 years ago.

This first issue of Verbum SVD 2007 reflects both events. The first paper looks back on 100 years of SVD missionary activity in Japan. It gives an overview of the chequered history of the Church in Japan during this period, sketches the problems of the present and takes a look at the future – all of this from the viewpoint of the Divine Word Missionaries working in the country.

The following article treats the 75-year history of the SVD in In-dia. It traces the historical development and reflects on present-day mission work in India as well as the challenges Christian mission here will be facing in the future.

The other contributions discuss subjects of importance for the missionary Church today.

One paper presents the influence of Pentecostalism, which is definitely not a fringe movement any longer, on Christianity in Ghana. This development raises a number of questions that the mainline churches need to address.

Another article treats the search for peace in our modern world. This is an eminently missionary theme of the utmost importance today. I need only mention the speech of the Pope in Regensburg, the upcoming second Synod for Africa on “The Service of Reconciliation, Justice and Peace” and the international assembly of IAMS next year, which has chosen the theme “Human Identity and the Gospel of Reconciliation.”

The last contribution has to do with the biblical apostolate, spe-cifically the method of bibliodrama, which is gaining importance in the countries of Asia.
