From "Gaudium et Spes" to a "New Culture." Towards New Ways of Communicating

While Inter Mirifica was one of the first two documents published in the beginning of Vatican II (1963) Gaudium et Spes was the last one (1965). This is reflected in additional approaches of Gaudium et Spes to Social Communication. Thus especially the importance of modern media developments in and for cultures with additional opportunities and challenges are mentioned (54). They are reflected in a “New Culture” determined by communication. This is shown in the fact of the “Death of Distance”: Everybody can be reached by everybody anywhere at any time. Traditional communication means are transcended by modern technical (Internet) and editorial (“Weblog”) developments. Modern communication means shape this “New Culture” in “new ways of communicating” leading to a “total communication environment” which is determined by “new technologies,” a “new language” and “new psychology.” The Gospel message has to be integrated into such a New Culture which Pope John Paul II considers to be a “complex issue” (Redemptoris Missio 37c) but also a special challenge.

Inter Mirifica war eines der ersten beiden Dokumente, die das 2. Vatikanische Konzil veröffentlichte (1963). Das letzte Dokument des Konzils, Gaudium et Spes (1965), enthält zusätzliche Einsichten zur Sozialen Kommunikation. Hier wird die Bedeutung moderner technischer Entwicklungen und besonders die Bedeutung der Kultur hervorgehoben (54). Solche neuen Entwicklungen spiegeln sich etwa in der Tatsache, dass Entfernungen nicht mehr viel bedeuten: Jeder kann zu jeder Zeit überall erreicht werden. Traditionelle Wege der Kommunikation werden ersetzt oder überschattet durch neue technische und auch methodologische Entwicklungen wie das Internet oder der „Weblog“. Moderne Medien bestimmen jetzt die Art und Weise der Kommunikation, die zu einer „totalen“ Kommunikation führt, welche durch neue Technologien, aber auch eine neue Sprache und eine neue Psychologie bestimmt wird. Die christliche Botschaft muss in eine solche „Neue Kultur“ eingebracht werden, was Papst Johannes Paul II. als eine „verwickelte Aufgabe“, aber zugleich auch als besondere Möglichkeit (Redemptoris Missio 37c) erkennt.

El último documento del Concilio, “Gaudium et Spes”, agrega algunos aspectos a la comunicación social. En ellos se destaca la importancia de las técnicas modernas y sobre todo, la importania de la cultura. Se manifiestan estos desarrollos nuevos p.ej. en el hecho de que ya no existen distancias: cualquiera puede ser contactado a cualquier hora. Caminos tradicionales de comunicación son remplazados o relegados por nuevos desarrollos técnicos y también metodológicos como el Internet o el “Weblog”. Modernos medios de comunicación determinan ahora el modo de comunicarse, llevan a una comunicación “total” que incluye nuevas tecnologías, un lenguaje nuevo y una nueva psicologia. El mensaje cristiano tiene que hacer uso de esta “Nueva Cultura”, y el papa Juan Pablo II reconoce esto como una “tarea intricada”, pero al mismo tiempo como una oportunidad singular (Redemptoris Missio 37c).
